The magic of your eyes flowed into my love poetry.

And every writer's frame grew drunk on it.

And it made its way to hearts like the glad tidings

of Joseph, when they made their way to Jacob.

It draws the yearning lover toward you, as wine sways

one reveler's side toward another reveler.

So be proud as your beauty pleases; it is not

strange to be haughty when love wills it.

And stain your glance with hearts, for we

love no sword unless it is bloodstained.

And wrong us however you please,

and as coquetry pleases in tormenting me.

And leave me, my eye watching the star,

and leave me to whatever my watcher wills.

All the suffering that souls abhor

is dear if it touches them from a beloved.

O summoners of sleeplessness every night,

and enemies of slumber and people of lamentation,

and those with wasting afflictions, their livers burning

    for her—every sorrowful lover—

show her the hearts; perhaps she

will feel ashamed of what she does to hearts.

Do not be miserly, O gazelle, if you revive

a lover who wandered among white sandhills and dunes,

from afar, if he comes at dawn from afar,

and from nearby, if he comes at dawn from nearby.

I am Job in my love for you; where, then, is the patience

    that dispels Job's sorrows?

And my heart is in your palms; it is better

for the ailing one to be with the physician.
