The fair women saw stars in the sky,

So they made them necklaces upon their breasts.

And they saw the sun’s light laughing in the midmorning,

So they donned faces and cheeks fashioned from it.

And they saw it rise and set, never tiring,

So they made that their drawing near and turning away.

I am indeed an expert on women, and I have seen

In them a heart that remains ever envious.

For if they saw a bough that had adorned itself

With fruit, they would envy that bough.

And when angered, they make the means of reconciliation

A finger, or a wrist, or a neck.

And their hearts, where jewelry is concerned, are like these nights:

If they lack the full moon, they are black.

Indeed, women are creatures: if beguiled,

Then they are captives, and jewelry their chains.
