Stay where you are, O full moon, even if you are a tale-bearer.

Perhaps you will tell her something of what ails me.

Stay, O full moon, that I may lament my love for her,

and bear witness before God concerning what you saw.

Stay; do not hurry, that you may witness my hour.

For I see the hours of my life as seconds.

    وتلكَ وإن لمْ أدعُها باسمِها هيا

    And, O full moon, take my eye, for that is her bed;

and that is she, though I have not called her by her name.

I am jealous for her, lest you face her

and carry meanings from her face to the tale-bearers.

And I fear your radiance for her, just as

a coward fears sharp swords for his life.

For I see a body such that, if my tears

flowed over it, that body would become bloodied.

My only wonder is at the full moon, which claims

Layla's coy reserve, yet I find it naked.

O full moon, I am worthy of kindness; so do

me a favor: you will find me repaying kindness.

And here is a kiss from me to her; place it

upon her mouth, and return to me with her breaths.

And if beauty brings nothing but reproachers,

then, O full moon, be a good reproacher and tale-bearer.

Proclaim her beauty in every horizon you illuminate,

and count our nights for as long as we live.

As though love had been inscribed before our existence

as a book, to last as long as the universe endures.

The full moon is its title, and the sky has become

its pages, and the brilliant stars its letters.

And I have divided my soul into two halves: one

in my body, and another with her that does not see me.

A day must come when it returns to its source,

either through union between us, or through my death.

I have seen no one but myself whose one part betrayed another,

so he became preoccupied, and yet empty.

By your Lord, O my soul—and your Lord is witness—

was love a cause for congratulations, or for condolences?

And has Hind ever remembered me and felt pity

for what ails me, and imitated me in weeping—or feigned weeping?

And has her soul told her that, for her, I am

deeply in love—or that I have ceased to yearn?

My heart nearly overflows with blood at her remembrance,

so I may write with it the rhymes of my love for her.

And my soul wastes away in sorrow when I see her,

and passion fells me whenever she says, 'Ah, O...'

And if I had hope, my misfortunes would grow light,

but among them is that I have no hope.

O you whose eyelids shelter sleep from me,

shelter my heart, then, from those eyelids.

You deny my eye what your eyes have, just as

slaves shun their master out of wariness.

And I swear, were you one day to weep for love,

I would not weep, out of reverence for your eyelids.

Have I no excuse for passion, when my eyes

see everything in you as a summons to love?

And people have exalted you so high that I thought they

called the stars maidservants for your sake.

And how often I play the youth for you, until it seems

I found you a beauty adorned with youthful playfulness.

So if they asked me about my wishes, I would add nothing

beyond this: that you kill me, and I be created a second time.
