Over the sun hang veils woven from clouds,
as fair women have a canopy and a bed.

And the beautiful woman is veiled, yet her beauty
carries lovers round wherever it turns.

And some of youthful passion's burdens awaken sorrow;
what, then, when the causes of love are so many?

In every beauty lies a reminder for the one
who loves; no heart forgets its passion.

كأنيas though I إلىtoward وجهِthe face of الحبيبِthe beloved أشيرُI point
I feel, whenever I cast a glance at the sun,
as though I were pointing toward the beloved's face.
وماand not رقبتيmy watching للصبحِfor dawn إلاexcept تعللاًself-consolation
لعلَperhaps طلوعَthe rising of الشمسِthe sun منهُfrom him بشيرُa herald of good news
And my watch for dawn is only self-consolation:
perhaps the sunrise is a herald of glad tidings from him.

And I have sighs whose heat, if it took bodily form,
would become a sun shining in the sky.

And truly, in nearness or separation, it pleases me
when fragrance wafts from him in the morning.

وإماor else صبرناwe endure والكريمُand the noble person صبورُpatient
These are two paths of abasement: either passion drinks its fill,
or we endure—and the noble are patient.

وفيand among الناسِpeople أعمىًblind قلبُهhis heart وبصيرُand discerning

And human hearts have manifold natures;
among people are the blind of heart and the discerning.

And though I have not endured the rule of a people,
my heart is a prince over all hearts.

And though among the wealthy I am a son of my hour,
no one is poor once contented.

And if it grants a soul its wish, alike are
the great—even if you exalt it—and the small.

And as long as the heavenly spheres keep turning,
within them, events follow upon events.

And many a day was mine, with the sun circling above it,
and full moons passing over it in the darkness.

I donned the wing of revelry that day, and never ceased
fluttering with it, until I almost flew.

And desire won from it brides of delight,
whose saliva is wine and whose mouths are cups.

A time that seemed to have been a home for revelry,
so its hours were secluded chambers for diversions.

We exacted solemn pledges from time then,
so its days were graves for calamities.

And the finest of a young man's days is his day of play,
with the natural innocence of children, though he is grown.

And indeed, time's cares are death to its people;
so whatever there is of play—that is resurrection.
