    مجمع من حُطامِ

    O, who will help a wasted, fallen man,

    pieced together from wreckage—

  2. بقيةٌ من سلو

    على بقايا غرام

    a remnant of forgetfulness

    upon the remnants of passion,

  3. وقطعة من جفاء

    في قطعة من سلام

    and a fragment of estrangement

    within a fragment of peace?

  4. أضيء كالنجم لكن

    في وحدة وظلام

    I shine like a star, but

    in solitude and darkness;

  5. وما أكابد ناراً

    يروه نوراً أمامي

    and what I endure as fire,

    they see as light before me.

  6. ما نفعُ رقةِ روحي

    تندى كطلّ الغمام

    What use is my soul's tenderness,

    dewy as the dew of clouds,

  7. وكلُّ ما هو حولي

    كحلق عطشان ظامي

    when everything around me

    is like a thirsty, parched throat?

  8. يا واصلي بالمعاني

    وهاجري في الكلام

    O you who draw close to me through meanings,

    and forsake me in speech,

  9. مخاصمي في نهاري

    مصالحي في منامي

    who quarrel with me during my day,

    who make peace with me in my dreams:

  10. من العبوس كلامٌ

    معناه معنى ابتسام

    From a frown comes speech

    whose meaning is that of a smile.

  11. ولن يغير جسم الوداد

    ثوبُ الخصام

    And the body of affection will not be altered

    by the garment of discord.

  12. ما نفع رقة روحي

    تندى كطل الغمام

    What use is my soul's tenderness,

    dewy as the dew of clouds,

  13. وكل ما هو حولي

    كحلق عطشان ظامي

    when everything around me

    is like a thirsty, parched throat?
