O canopy of the wave! The sea surges, convulsing

With it, as though a mountain in the sea were being uprooted.

You would think it an earthquake seated in the water—

Or no—a whirlwind lies down in the water.

    فأطبقت فارتمت كالرعب تندفع

    It rocked, then soared, then bent back, then plunged;

Then closed over and hurled itself forward, rushing like terror

Upon a drowning man clinging to a rope of water,

And the rope snaps at the touch of his palm.

    ينازع الموت فيها وهي تنتزع

    He has a remnant of life in his fingers;

He wrestles with death for it as it is torn away.

Between life and death he is tossed,

The sea alternately vomits him up and swallows him.

Is that more terrible in its tragedy,

Or the lovers, stricken by the loss of their beloveds?

O my soul's tenderness for lovers! You would imagine them

On the day of parting, with pieces torn from their hearts.

Love kills them through patience if they are patient,

And love kills them through anguish if they grow distraught.

If they bid a departing one farewell, you find their grief comes not

From his going away, but from their own return.

My Lord, when will You grant sorrows an inventor

On this earth, who invents a means of forgetting?
