مرت على الورد في الأكمام فارتعشت

أسى وقالت أهذا قلبه الدامي

She passed by the roses in their calyxes and trembled

She passed by the rose in her sleeves and trembled

In sorrow, and said, "Is this his bleeding heart?"

With sorrow saying, "Is this his bloody heart?"

وأبصرت غصناً ظمآن منطرحاً

وأبصرت غصناً ظمآن منطرحاً

فما رأت فيه إلا بعض أسقامي

فما رأت فيه إلا بعض أسقامي

And she saw a thirsty branch lying prostrate,

And saw a thirsty branch fallen down

So she saw in it nothing but some of my ailments.

In which she saw nothing but my illnesses

وتسمع الطير صداحاً بأيكته

وتسمع الطير صداحاً بأيكته

يشكو فتسمع في شكواه أنغامي

يشكو فتسمع في شكواه أنغامي

And she hears the bird singing in its grove;

And you hear the birds lamenting with their cries

It laments, and in its lament she hears my melodies.

Complaining, and in their complaints you hear my melodies

حقيقة الحب فيها ثم تظهر لي

كأنني عالق منها بأوهام

The reality of love is in her, yet she appears to me

The essence of love in it appears to me

As though I were clinging to illusions of her.

As if I'm stuck in its fantasies

How strange the mirror I look upon,
