Misery's quarry—patience itself wearied of her misery.

And her bleak days dragged on upon the dusty earth.

And she was as she wished, and as her beauty wished,

As lofty ideals desired, as poetry described.

A pearl sparkles on the breast of noble virtues,

Encircled by pearls from the necklace of her ancestry.

She shared in divine beauty, and it turned

To share with her—a wondrous affair between them.

So from her the sun has beauty's radiant countenance,

And in her, from the sun, are blazing fire and embers.

And from her the flowers have beauty's fragrant melody,

And in her is withering, just as the flowers withered.

And from her the gazelle has her eyes and her neck,

And from the gazelle she has its restless glances and terror.

And war is nothing but a steady rain of blood:

If humankind's soul is sullied, war is its cleansing.

And war is nothing but an outburst of God's wrath that touched

The disgraces of this age, so the age burst apart.

So in every soul is a choking lump it cannot swallow,

And in every heart a fracture beyond mending.

And never did swords twist on earth a loop

Of hatred without heads serving as its button.

And how often were humanity and love proclaimed,

And science and civilization, and the many things like them!
