كنتُ أرجوكَ أن تعينَ على اله

كنتُ أرجوكَ أن تعينَ على اله

مّ إذا أنتَ للهمومِ معينُ

مّ إذا أنتَ للهمومِ معينُ

I used to implore you to help me against sorrow,

I hoped you would help relieve my worries

yet behold, you are a helper to sorrows.

Yet when worries came, you were no comfort

ثمَّ أصبحتَ بالودادِ جواداً

ثمَّ أصبحتَ بالودادِ جواداً

وفتى الجودِ بالودادِ ضنينُ

وفتى الجودِ بالودادِ ضنينُ

Then you became generous with affection,

Then with affection you became generous

while a generous young man is sparing with affection.

But the generous youth is stingy with affection

فإذا كنتَ قد ظننتَ غروراً

فإذا كنتَ قد ظننتَ غروراً

إنما أنتَ جوهرٌ مكنونُ

إنما أنتَ جوهرٌ مكنونُ

So if you had imagined, in delusion,

If you thought yourself deceitfully grand

that you are nothing but a hidden jewel,

You're but a hidden gem in need of polish

فبهذي الفعالِ والخلقِ السو

فبهذي الفعالِ والخلقِ السو

ءِ وتبينتَ أن فعلكَ شينُ

ءِ وتبينتَ أن فعلكَ شينُ

then, through these deeds and your evil character,

By these vile deeds and nature unkind

you have also realized that your conduct is a disgrace.

Your actions showed a villain's mark outlined
