وماand how أدنىnear الهبوطَthe descent منto الصعودِthe ascent
I see man grow tyrannical when he grows rich.
I see man tyrannize when he sings
And how close descent is to ascent!
And how slight is the descent from the ascent
يظنُّhe thinks الناسَthe people منof خلقٍa creation قديمِancient
ويحبسهُand he confines him أتاهمhe came to them منfrom جديدِnew
He thinks people are of an ancient creation,
People think they are from an ancient creation
And confines him—he has come to them anew.
And what came to them is new
كماjust as تعمىbecome blind البهائمُthe beasts حينَwhen ترعىthey graze
عنto الشوكِthe thorns الكثيرِmany لأجلِfor the sake of عودِa twig
Just as beasts, when grazing, turn blind
Like cattle are blinded when grazing
To the many thorns for the sake of a twig.
From the abundant thorns for the sake of a stick
متىwhenever كانتْwere جيوبكَyour pockets منof نضارٍgold
فقدthen indeed صارتْhave become جنوبكَyour sides منof حديدِiron
Whenever your pockets are of gold,
When your pockets are full and tidy
Then your sides have turned to iron.
Your sides have become of iron
ومنand of عجبٍwonder يكونُis المالُwealth تاجاًa crown
وحبُّand love المالِwealth أشبهُmore similar بالقيودِto fetters
And how strange that wealth should be a crown,
How strange is that money becomes a crown
And love of wealth more like fetters.
And love of money most resembles shackles

So, alas for the poor, who have become
Oh what a pity for the poor who
Like wood dried for fuel.
Became like dry kindling for the firewood

Their tears are dinars, and yet
Their tears are dinars but
People have turned a blind eye to these coins.
People turn blind eye to this money

جزاءُthe reward of السَّعيstriving يعطىis given للقعودِto idleness
Is it not fraud—and injustice—
Is it not cheating, which is injustice
That striving's reward is given to idleness?
The reward of effort given to the idle

And whoever reaps—woe lies in failing
And whoever reaps, woe to not
To drive birds away from the grain of the harvest.
Repel the birds from the beloved harvest
ومنand whoever يحملْbears علىupon عنقٍa neck حساماًa sword
فقدthen indeed ظمأhas thirsted الحسامُthe sword إلىfor الوريدِthe jugular vein
And whoever bears a sword upon a neck,
And whoever carries a sword on the neck
Then the sword has thirsted for the jugular vein.
The sword has thirsted for the vein

حسوداًenvious يتقيguards against شرَّthe evil of الحسودِthe envier
And mankind has always been, one toward another,
And the people are still envious of each other
Envious, guarding against the envier's evil.
Avoiding the evils of the envious
يقولُsay الناسُthe people إنthat المالَwealth ماءٌwater
بهِby it يحيىlives المجدُّthe diligent person معَwith البليدِthe dullard
People say that wealth is water,
People say that money is water
By which the diligent live alongside the dull.
With it glory comes alive with the stupid

Is filtered water like what you see
Like filtered water, what do you see
Containing both impurities—mud and worms?
Containing the turbid clay and worms

And how does the sea, surging in turmoil,
And where is the sea that is turbulent
Compare with swamps lying stagnant?
From the marshes that are stagnant

Thus humankind was created: some are wretched,
Thus people were created, so whoever is miserable
Misery clings to them, and some are happy.
Misery accompanies him, and whoever is happy

And whoever is angry at Saturn, why not
Turn the star of good fortune with his palm?
Turn the star of luck with his palm

And the radiance of solid gold

ليتَّضحَso that it becomes distinct الفناءُmortality منfrom الخلودِimmortality
Laws have long prevailed in the universe,
Customs that have always existed
So that mortality may be distinguished from immortality.
So that death from immortality is evident
