قلتُI said للغادةِto the graceful maiden البخيلةِthe stingy one لماwhen
رفضتْshe rejected رقعتيmy note وخافتْand she feared جوابيmy reply
I said to the stingy maiden, when
I said to the stingy beauty when
She rejected my note and feared my reply:
She rejected my note and feared my response:
ماwhat لمرwith the passing of النسيمِthe breeze يجرحُwounds خديكِyour two cheeks
ومرُand the passing of النسيمِthe breeze مثلlike عتابيmy reproach
“Why does the breeze’s passing wound your cheeks,
Why should the breeze hurt your cheek
When the breeze’s passing is like my reproach?
When the breeze is like my reproach?
وللمسِand with the touch of الحريرِsilk يوجعِhurts كفيكِyour two palms
ولمسُand the touch of الحريرsilk مثلثthreefold (probably a typo for ‘like’) كتابيmy letter
And why does silk’s touch hurt your palms,
Why should the silk hurt your hand
When silk’s touch is like my letter?”
When the silk is like my letter?
فرأيتُthen I saw العيونَthe eyes تنطقُspeaking بالسحرِwith magic
وقالتْand they said عليagainst me فصلُdecisiveness of الخطابِspeech
Then I saw the eyes speaking magic,
Then I saw the eyes speak magic
And they pronounced final judgment against me:
And she said, "End this talk!"
عوذتْshe warded منكَagainst you قلبُهاher heart بالتجنيwith groundless accusations
ورقتْand she charmed منكَagainst you كفهاher palm بالخضابِwith henna
“She warded her heart against you with feigned grievances,
Her heart sought refuge from you by avoidance
And charmed her palm against you with henna.”
Her hand softened toward you with henna
