I pass the night, and no bed can hold my side.

And some of the sleep I find is denied me.

Longings turn me over with their pricks, as though I were

A worn-out garment being patched in love's hand.

I have need of sleeplessness, though sleeplessness kills me

With my tears—and some of death is steeped in water.

So, O sleepers, what is the pleasure of slumber?

Have you not, like me, a heart and ribs?

And how can the eye sleep when the heart is in pain?

And how can the heart be well when feeling brings pain?

Love is like light; the sons of love are like

Stars that gleam when night enfolds them.

And love's light has never ceased to dwell in every being,

But for some reason, part of it does not shine.

Not every lamp is endowed with electric power,

Nor is everyone who sees the sun a Joshua.

And oh, how grievous is what I suffer from love alone!

How then, when aloofness is in the beloved's nature?

Is love anything but the scandal you see?

And what would musk be if it did not spread its fragrance?

My heart is like a flame that has fastened itself

To my body, and fire's nature is to race through wood.

I am not the only one they call a lover,

But I alone am the one who suffers.

And every eye has tears, yet I

Have tears in my eyes that the wretched do not share.

O my eye, my tears are no small matter to me.

How long, how long will you grieve, and I grieve?

As though you were in every heart: whoever weeps,

You weep for him; the noble man is deceived by people.

Misfortunes have surrounded me on every side,

As though calamities were a deathbed beneath my sides.

Amid hopes I am like a boat on the deep:

When the deep bears it up, it is raised only to be lowered.

Not every woman who bends tenderly over a child is his mother,

Nor is every woman who draws him to the breast a wet nurse.

Will the world then return as I once knew it?

And will what has passed of life's earlier days return?

In love I have a sun; when it rises,

I see by it how the clouds of sorrow are dispersed.

But my luck has it that my lot is its night.

And who imagines the sun rising at night?

Both of us feel longing, but this is love:

Coquetry and abandonment, despair and hope.

For if I discern what to do today, there comes to me

A tomorrow with what I have not discerned how to handle.
