أناديكَI call to you ياO قلبُheart مذsince ودعواthey bade farewell
فماso what ليwith me أناديI call ولاand not تسمعُyou hear
I have been calling you, O heart, since they bade farewell;
I call upon you, O heart, since they departed,
So why do I call while you do not hear?
Yet why should I call when you do not hear?
أماis it not? أنتَyou أخضعتنيyou made me submit للهوىto love
وماand not كنتُI was لولاwere it not for الهوىlove أخضعُI submit
Was it not you who made me submit to love?
Did you not submit me to passion’s rule?
And but for love, I would never have submitted.
Without passion, I'd never so submit.
أماis it not? قدindeed أطعتكَI obeyed you فيin حبهِloving him
وكنتُand I was لهُto him العبدُthe slave بلnay أطوعُmore obedient
Have I not obeyed you in loving him,
Did you not obey it in its love?
And been his slave—nay, more obedient still?
To it was I obedient, even more obedient.
ألمdid not? ائتمنكَI entrust you علىwith أضلعيmy ribs
وكانتْand were مغانيكَyour dwelling places الأضلعُthe ribs
Did I not entrust you with my ribs?
Did I not entrust you with my ribs?
And my ribs were your dwelling places.
And were not its songs your ribs?
أماis it not? أنتَyou بيتُthe home حياتيmy life وهلْand is there?
لنفسيfor my soul منfrom بعدهاafter it مطمعُhope
Are you not the home of my life? And is there
Are you not the house of my life? What else
Any hope for my soul beyond that life?
After it could my soul covet?
وكنتُand I was أظنكَI thought you ليto me راجعاًreturning
فماso what لكَwith you ياO قلبُheart لاnot ترجعُyou return
And I thought you would return to me;
I thought you would come back to me,
So why, O heart, do you not return?
So why, O heart, do you not return?
أماindeed والذيby the one who فيin يدهِhis hand القلوبُhearts
فأنىso whenever ذكرتُI mention اسمهُhis name تدمعُyou weep
Indeed, by the one in whose hand are hearts,
By Him in Whose hand are the hearts,
Whenever I mention his name, you weep.
When I speak His name, you weep,
ويسرعُand races فيthrough خاطريmy mind ذكرهُthe thought of him
ودمعيَand my tears منthan ذكرهِthe thought of him أسرعُswifter
And the thought of him races through my mind,
And the thought of Him quickens within me,
And my tears are swifter than the thought of him.
At the thought of Him, my tears flow fast.
وقدand indeed غادرتْنيhas left me النوىseparation بعدهُafter him
إذاwhen وصفواthey describe ليto me النوىseparation أجزعُI grow distraught
And separation, since his departure, has left me—
The beloveds have left me after Him,
When they describe separation to me, I grow distraught—
If they describe them, I panic.
نحيلthin كأنيَas though I منfrom خصرهِhis waist
ولكننيbut I دونهُunlike him الموجعُthe one in pain
Thin, as though I were part of his waist;
I have grown thin, as though from His waist,
But unlike him, I am the one in pain.
Yet beyond Him I suffer.
وقدand indeed حسبونيthey thought me طيفَa phantom الخيالِimagination
لولاwere it not for الوسادةُthe pillow والمضجعُand the bed
And they would have thought me a phantom of imagination,
They suppose me a phantom of dream's form
Were it not for the pillow and the bed.
Were it not for pillow and bed.
فياso, O ظبيُgazelle كيفَhow أسلتَyou made flow الحشاthe inmost heart
وكنتَand you used to بواديin the valley of الحشااترتعُthe heart; you graze
So, O gazelle, how did you melt my heart,
O gazelle, how did you roam the wilderness?
When you used to graze in the valley of my heart?
You used to graze among the wild shrubs.
وياand O بدرُfull moon كيفَhow صعدتَyou ascended الفؤادthe heart
وكنتَand you used to بآفاقهِon its horizons تطلعُyou rise
And O full moon, how did you ascend the heart,
O moon, how did you rise in my heart?
When you used to rise on its horizons?
You used to rise on its horizons.
أقامَsettled بموضعِin the place of قلبيmy heart الأسىsorrow
فلوso if عادَit returned لمwould not يسعِhave room الموضعُthe place
Sorrow has settled in the place of my heart;
Sorrow has lodged in my heart's place,
So, were it to return, the place would not hold it.
If it returns, there'll be no room.
