وقدand indeed غَلَبَprevailed الأمرانِthe two matters فيهاconcerning her علىover أمريmy will
I complained of love for her; she complained of me to estrangement,
I complained of her love, so she blamed me and turned away
and the two matters concerning her prevailed over my will.
The two matters overcame my own in her
وبتُّand I spent the night ولاand no منany حيلةٍrecourse غيرَexcept أننيthat I

I spent the night with no recourse except that I
I remained steadfast, with no stratagem but that
find remembrance wounds me, yet yearn for remembrance.
I see remembrance befall me, so I yearn for remembrance
مهاةٌan oryx doe لعينيهاfor her eyes تغزلتُI sang love poetry فيabout المَهىthe oryxes

وماand not غَزَليmy love poetry فيabout سِحرِهِنَّtheir enchantment سِوىanything but السِّحرِmagic
An oryx doe—for her eyes I sang love songs of oryxes,
Dazzled by her eyes, I became enamored with love
and my love poetry on their enchantment is nothing but magic.
And nothing enchanted me in their magic but magic itself
وأعشقُand I passionately love فيهاin her الشمسَthe sun والبدرَand the full moon والذيand what
يشبهُliken العشَّاقthe lovers بالشمسِto the sun والبدرِand the full moon
I love in her the sun, the full moon, and what
And I love in her the sun, the moon, and the one
lovers liken to the sun and the full moon.
Who makes lovers resemble the sun and the moon
وماand nothing مضَّنيtormented me إلاexcept جفاهاher coldness ولحظُهاand her glance

فإنَّfor indeed كلاboth السيفينthe two swords أُغمِدَwere sheathed فيin صدريmy breast
Nothing tormented me but her coldness and her glance,
And nothing led me on except her aloofness and her glance
for both swords were sheathed in my breast.
For both swords were sheathed in my chest

She appeared to us briefly one day, and since then
She appeared to us in the palace one day, and has not ceased
my soul has never stopped fluttering over the palace.
To flap my soul after that over the palace
وراحتand she departed وقدhaving already صدتturned away ْ وبينَand between قلوبناour hearts
مسافةُthe distance ماwhat بينbetween الوصالِunion إلىto الهجرِestrangement
She departed, having turned away; between our hearts
And she left while ignoring me, and between our hearts
lay the distance from union to estrangement.
Was the distance between union and separation
فقاسمتُهاso I shared with her قلبيmy heart وقلتُand I said لعاذليto my reproacher
لهاfor her شطرهاher half مماof what قسمتَyou divided وليand for me شطريmy half
So I shared my heart with her and told my reproacher:
So I divided my heart for her and said to my reproacher
"She has her half of what you divided, and I have mine."
She gets her share of what you divided, and I get my share
وأنفقتُand I spent أياميmy days كماjust as أسرفتْspent lavishly يديmy hand
جواداًgenerous بماليwith my wealth فيin هواهاlove for her وبالعمرِand with my life
I spent my days as lavishly as my hand spent,
And I spent my days wastefully, as my hand was generous
generous with my wealth in love for her, and with my life.
With my money in passion for her, and with my life
ولماand when تلاقيناwe met ومالتْand she leaned away تجافياًin aversion
كماjust as تحذرُfears الورقاءُthe gray dove جارحةthe talon of الصقرِthe falcon
And when we met, she leaned away in aversion,
And when we met and she turned away indifferently
as a gray dove fears the falcon's talon.
As the gazelle is wary of the clutching falcon

I pressed my hand upon my heart, while love's hand
I gripped my heart in my hand, and the hand of passion
turned it among my ribs upon embers.
Tossed it between the ribs over embers
وقلتand I said لهاto her أبقيspare علىupon الودِّaffection ساعةan hour
لعلَّperhaps لناfor us فيin الغيبthe unseen يوماًa day ولاand not ندريwe know
I said to her, "Spare our affection for an hour;
And I said to her, "Keep affection for an hour
perhaps a day awaits us in the unseen, though we do not know."
Perhaps we will have a day in the future, though we know not"
فقالتso she said أغيرis there other than العيدthe feast يومٌa day لشاعرٍfor a poet
بحسبكَenough for you يومَthe day of العيدِthe feast ياO قمرَmoon of الشعرِpoetry
She said, "Has a poet any day but the feast?
So she said, "Is there for a poet any day but the feast day,
The feast day suffices you, O moon of poetry."
You have your feast day, O moon of poetry"

So I rose, having discerned my purpose, and remained
So I stood up, seeing my intention, and did not stop
with my thoughts until dawn shone out of my thoughts.
In my reflection until dawn shone from my reflection

And I possess, from the sundry riches in its treasuries,
And I have from the fragments in its treasures
varied necklaces of verse and prose.
Various necklaces of prose and verse
أعباسO Abbas إنif لمnot يبتدرْhasten to مدحكpraising you الورىhumankind

O Abbas, if people do not hasten to praise you,
Glory, if the people do not seize praising you
then may tongues that do not flow with your praise never speak.
No tongue will speak praising you that flows

Though you have no need of any eulogist,
For you have become needless of any praiser
through your resplendent deeds and your radiant days.
With your magnificent traces and splendid days

You bestowed this poetry on me, until it was as though
And you have bestowed upon me this poetry, as if
I had gathered precious pearls from the seashore.
I picked up my precious soul from the shore of the sea

My praise was nothing but your qualities, which
And my praise was nothing but your attributes
are the blossoms, if my praise is fragrant as perfume.
Which are the flowers, if my praise exudes like perfume

And every utterance is cheap, however precious,
And indeed, every saying is cheap, even if it's dear,
for a king of lands whose soil is gold dust.
For the king of a land with soil of ashes

وهلand is there فيamong الورىhumankind منanyone who يعدلequates البحرَthe sea بالنهرِwith the river
The Nile flowed there, imitating the bounty of his hand;
The Nile flowed in it, mimicking your palm's Nile
yet who among mankind equates the sea with the river?
And is there in existence one who equals the sea with a river?

So they set the dam upon it, until I imagined it
They were deluded by it until they left it
a guardian showing the river how to spend in due measure.
A trustee who shows him how to spend with measure

The Nile in Egypt is nothing but her heart's blood;
And the Nile in Egypt is nothing but its heart's blood
if they safeguard it, life endures in Egypt.
If they preserve it, the soul will remain in Egypt

It overflows in the era of Abbas with what you see
of knowledge—what once was a tale of the curtained chamber.
Of knowledge that was from the news of Hudur

Young sovereign, no hardship is complained of in your age,
O noble son of kings, no hardship is complained of in your time
and this day marked the beginning of ease.
And this day was the opener of ease

The lining of nights meeting the dawn

this people's high achievements in the pages of glory.
The heights of this people in the annals of pride

They saw you a youth above kings in resolve
and how far apart are sparrows and the eagle!
And far is the difference between sparrows and the eagle

So you remained hoped for in your prophet, congratulating
as long as the full moon's majesty endures among the radiant stars.
The continuance of the full moon's glory among the brilliant stars
