He never faltered in patience with you when you forsook him.

If his patience was of use, he would have walked your path

تطوي الليالي في هواكَ حياتهُ

وأراهُ ينساها ولا ينساكا

The nights fold away his life in love for you,

The nights roll by in longing for you, his life

And I see him forget it, yet never forget you.

رُحماكَ يا من أطالَ بليتي

Have mercy, O you who have prolonged my affliction;

أعليَّ هذا الهجرُ طالَ عذابهُ

This estrangement burdened me with unending torment

فلقد عرفتُ بكَ الشقا بعدَ الهنا

لما عضبتَ علي بعد رضاكا

For through you I have known misery after bliss,

For I learned anguish from you after bliss

When you grew angry with me after once favoring me.

نهنهْ دموعكَ يا حزينُ فإنها

دُوَلٌ سيضحكَ الذي أبكاكا

Restrain your tears, O sorrowful one, for these are

Dry your tears, o sorrowful one, for they

Turns of fortune; he who made you weep will make you laugh.

Are nations that will make laugh the one who made you cry
