He complains to his lips of the heat of my breath,

And my soul holds nothing but the anguish of despair.

And he sees the heart wounded by his gaze,

And his cruel heart feels no pity for my heart.

A sword wound has a healer to treat it,

And I find no healer for the wound of a glance.

So if love means that I live without hope,

Then I have cut the ropes that tied me to hope.

And if lovers, like me, have been forsaken,

Then where is the affection of people's hearts for one another?

And where is one with a liver who pities another with a liver,

As though they had roasted it over firebrands?

Indeed, I see varied kinds of people,

And how often a kind is lost among other kinds!

And indeed, I find myself among people given to sloth,

As though they had sprung up from beneath graves.

So some of them fell among humiliation's hooves,

And some of them went astray between the cup and the bowl.

Had Kulayb been among them on the day of his calamity,

Jassas's spear would have disdained to stab Kulayb.
