عزمتَ على التجنبِّ أم تدلُّ

عزمتَ على التجنبِّ أم تدلُّ

وهل لسواكَ في قلبي محلُ

وهل لسواكَ في قلبي محلُ

Have you resolved to keep away, or are you playing coy?

Have you resolved to avoid me or just pretend?

And is there room in my heart for anyone but you?

Is there in your heart a place for anyone but me?

أما يرضيكَ مني أنَّ نفسي

أما يرضيكَ مني أنَّ نفسي

تذلُّ ومثلُ نفسي لا تذلُّ

تذلُّ ومثلُ نفسي لا تذلُّ

Does it not please you that my own soul

Does it not please you that my soul is humbled,

bows low, though a soul like mine does not bow?

While the like of my soul is not humbled?

وقدْ أحرقتَ قلبي ما تبالي

وقدْ أحرقتَ قلبي ما تبالي

وفيهِ إليكَ شوقٌ ما يُبَلُّ

وفيهِ إليكَ شوقٌ ما يُبَلُّ

And you have burned my heart, yet you do not care,

You have set my heart aflame, yet you don’t care.

And within it is a longing for you that is never quenched.

In it is a yearning for you that cannot be quelled.

فسل عينيكَ ما لهما استحالا

فسل عينيكَ ما لهما استحالا

دمي ودمي حرامٌ لا يُحلُّ

دمي ودمي حرامٌ لا يُحلُّ

So ask your eyes why they have deemed it lawful to shed

Ask your eyes what has changed them so,

my blood, though my blood is inviolable and may not be shed.

My blood and my blood are forbidden, they cannot be made lawful.

لقدْ كذبَ العواذلُ يومَ قالوا

لقدْ كذبَ العواذلُ يومَ قالوا

سلا أو سوفَ ينساهُ فيسلو

سلا أو سوفَ ينساهُ فيسلو

The reproachers surely lied the day they said:

The lovers lied when they said,

"He has ceased to pine, or will forget him and cease to pine."

"Ask for distraction or it will be forgotten in time."

وما أنا والسلُوُّ ونحنُ قومٌ

وما أنا والسلُوُّ ونحنُ قومٌ

إذا بلغوا الهدايةَ لم يضلوا

إذا بلغوا الهدايةَ لم يضلوا

And what have I to do with forgetting, when we are a people

I am not forgetting, we are a people,

who, once they attain guidance, do not go astray?

When we are rightly guided, we do not go astray.

أرى أيامَ عمري فيكَ تطوى

أرى أيامَ عمري فيكَ تطوى

كأنكَ الشمسُ والأيامُ ظلُّ

كأنكَ الشمسُ والأيامُ ظلُّ

I see the days of my life folded away in you,

I see my days with you folding up,

as though you were the sun, and the days a shadow.

As if you were the sun and the days mere shadows.
