God knows that I am enamored of you,

And as long as I live, I yearn for the memory of your sanctuary.

O heir to fidelity, have I no excuse

That pardons the fault, if I have a fault?

They have slandered me to you for a fault—but as for fault,

I have no fault except love.

And they wished to force the heart to be patient.

Woe to them! Does a lover have a heart?

Have you made the clouds your home in the sky,

So that no letters from you reach us?

Or what has caused estrangement and hatred,

While my heart, as you knew it, is loving?

Had you asked the breeze about me, it would have spent the evening

Blowing over your sanctuary with my sighs.

Or had you allowed the clouds to recall tears,

They would have spent the night pouring out tears.

Or had you approached the doves, mentioning me,

Their reproach for your coldness would have lasted long.

My illness is killing me, and you are my physician.

There is no cure for my illness but your favor.
