From the rift in my heart the morning it crumbled,

My soul's gazes rose, following you to heaven.

I saw you as a light in its heights, as though

A ray belonging to the lamp of Paradise.

It bore a mother's smile toward her child's face,

And the gleam of two eyes as they gazed in recognition.

If spirits were to send their light into the air,

I would recognize you by the light that smiled.

Because of you, I am between the two worlds, as though

I doubt this earthly world, for it belongs to neither.

I see it empty of you, save for virtues,

Living traces of goodness, and prayers for mercy,

And a grave: I see those graves as a Kaaba,

And that one within it as the noble, exalted Corner.

I pass by them, reverent, feeling my way,

And bend tenderly over it, submissive, touching it.

I kiss the earth which, when my tears touched it,

With weeping's soul, invoked blessings and peace upon you.

In these tears from this heart is a love

That through them has revealed life's hidden secret.

Were God to give the dust leave, through that love it would become

A heart, and these tears would turn to blood within it.

When my anguish overran the dwelling of patience,

And the sword of resolve clashed until its edge was notched,

I stood still; it was life's pause in death,

Upon a breath it released as it came to an end.

Between my ribs are two sighs of sorrow,

Wandering within my breast, never reaching my mouth.

As though they were two threads fastened to the heart:

If they rise, it rises; if they fall, it plunges.

I tremble with weakness, like a wing shaken

By its dove at her side since it was broken.

It seemed to me that space revolved around me,

And that my path stretched into the air as a ladder.

Ah, my anguish! How many a tear has surged

Within my breast—had it been in a mountain, the mountain would have ached.

It breathes within my heart and sets it aflame with grief,

And kindles it with sorrows, scorching it with thirst.

I wept, and found weeping as though it were

The reality of death turning into an illusion.

    I kindled Time's fire-stick by striking; unceasing

Were its thunderbolts, till I was illumined and it grew dark.

My eyes almost saw, in the clouds of my tears,

Whenever they trembled, lightning blazing with fire.

O tears of youthful days, would that

I had saved you for hardship—how much gentler you were!

You were the dew of my dawn; who can bring me dew

When the air grows searing from life's sun?

We wept those tears, then turned to our laughter,

Which sent us back to weep for them in regret.

I was distraught; were it not that your like among women

Is rare, I would have reproached much-blamed Time.

I would have said the earth had become halls of mourning

For you, if earth were fit to be a place of mourning.

What can a dwelling contain, whose inhabitants

Reach heaven in the blink of an eye?

If souls had a true reality within it,

That death would not remain a mystery.

In mourning you, I hated the night because of a star

That smiled in it above sorrow's darkness.

And quarreled with the garden, in mourning you, because of a bird

That sang in it above the tears of dew.

If this sorrow were knowledge, it would be spread

By my heart throughout the world, so the world might learn.

Ah, who can help against a decree that cannot be reversed once fulfilled,

And has no recompense, even one greater?

I humbled my proud tears before it, though they are

Dearer to me than the world, and nobler.

Were they to offer me, for one tear, every sea

On earth, my proud spirit would count weeping a sin.

Yet I weep for you with the eyes that

Beheld the world's face in your smile and mouth.

Let whoever was born of two mothers blame me

For my anguish, and assail me however he will.
