الأصدقاءُ قليلُ

والحرُّ فيهم أقلُّ

Friends are few,

Friends are few

and the noble among them are fewer.

The free among them are fewer

والناسُ كهْلٌ غنيٌّ

والناسُ كهْلٌ غنيٌّ

وذو شبابٍ مقلُّ

وذو شبابٍ مقلُّ

And people are either middle-aged and wealthy,

People are either old and rich

or young and poor.

Or young and poor

فلا ترى الشيخَ يقوى

فلا ترى الشيخَ يقوى

ولا الفتى يستقلُّ

ولا الفتى يستقلُّ

So you do not find the old man strong,

You see neither the old with strength

nor the young man self-sufficient.

Nor the young with independence
