Enough of turning away: our estrangement has left nothing

of us, nor have tears spared the corners of our eyes.

At the memory of you, my soul flies, fluttering,

over nights that visit us and take us captive,

when Time was open-faced and smiling,

its green sides watered by our hopes.

In them the breezes of reproach danced,

swaying there the sweet basil of our love.

Let Time no longer extend its hand to me after today,

for nothing but sorrow now lies in our hands,

and tears flowing under love's rein,

which would not flow had love not consented to them.

You have made these brilliant stars our reproachers,

and among them, sunrise is one of our enemies.

Gone is the time whose calamities

passed us by; this is a time that never misses us.

    فما لذا الدهرِ مُغرىً بالمحبينا

    And Time has broken the union that held us together;

what ails this Time, so obsessed with lovers?

Who will tell the dawn, when its assemblies convene,

that beneath the wing of darkness our mourner announces its death?

The nights of love once parted in smiles

to reveal it; today they spend the night weeping over me.

There was in it a beauty drawn from our freshness,

and in its face a serenity from our mutual affection,

in days when we did not know the full moon envied us

for our love, and dawn's light was our betrayer.

Pure, sparkling wine circulates in our cup,

from the cheek's rose one moment, and dark lips the next.

And the star is drunk with delight from drinking with us,

and the jewelry is rapturous as it sings to us.

    فما لقينا من الأيامِ يكفينا

    O my soul's desire, do not heed one who envies;

what we have suffered from the days is enough for us.

As though they had not sheltered us within their ribs,

nor ransomed us with the core of their heart,

nor had we spent a night adorned like a garden,

plucking varied pleasures there as we strolled.

And separation is thirsty; our reproachers never reckoned

that tears would surely quench its thirst and leave us thirsty.

So, O nights we remembered, while our livers

lay torn to pieces over them within our ribs!

What we used to hold back has flowed in your absence,

and separation has wrestled with us over the one who consoled us.

There is no relief in grief from what we battle—

separation—nor does our seeking solace help.

When the east wind's breeze grows gentle at its edges

over the backs of the hills, it sets about beguiling us.

Its fragrance stirs a passion from the memory of the dwellings,

and often they have recalled Darin through musk.

Within it are only lovers' greetings to

the graceful, companionable maidens, and varied pleas for pardon.

And how often it tells tales with the breaths it has carried—

there is life in them, yet it does not revive us.

Ask the darkness when its tresses have turned gray

from the horror of what I endure by night in our separation.

Has the sun appeared, inciting the reproachers against us,

weary-eyed, or has it come to greet us?

Our adversities have indeed assailed us; and how shall we fare

if our adversities keep us from meeting?

We pass the night as estrangement spreads us over the horizons,

as though we had never passed the night with union enfolding us.

She said, 'I saw you mad,' and I said to her,

'Were it not for love of you, we would not be madmen.'

O sun's face, vanished after it rose,

and gazelle of the plain, who has not returned to our valley!

Have troubles distracted you that do not distract us,

and has companionship amused you through the night, though it does not amuse us?

If our separation was easy for God,

then bringing us together is not hard for Him.
