A moon whose brother the sky has raised,

And a gazelle unmatched by other gazelles.

If he gazes, he puts women to shame; and if they say

"He holds aloof," women grow jealous of him.

The bān tree claims his stature and his sway,

Yet bān trees and human forms are not alike.

And the rose thinks itself the equal of his cheeks,

But his red cheeks reject the claim.

Is there a way to meet him, even if

The meeting does not cure the passion that ails me?

So I may whisper to him, as birds warble,

And the gray dove whispers to her mate.

    سِ فقد قطعَ القلوبَ الجفاءُ

    O king of love, fear God in your dealings with people;

For coldness has torn hearts apart.

If you are beauty’s shepherd among us,

Then I am one whose flock consists of poets.
