غانيةٌa beautiful woman كرونقِlike the sheen of الفرندِthe watered steel of a sword
لحاظُهاher glances مثلَlike سيوفَswords الهندِIndia
A beauty like the sheen of watered sword steel.
Like the color of French silk her cheek,
Her glances are like the swords of India.
Her face like the swords of India so sleek,
وشعرهاand her hair جنْدٌan army ولاand not كالجُندِlike the army
تعلمتْshe learned بطءَslowness الخطىthe steps منfrom فَنْدِFand
And her hair is an army, yet unlike an army.
Her hair an army, not troops to seek,
She learned slowness of step from Fand.
She learned her graceful walk from the Greek,
وعندهاand she has صبابةٌardent longing وعنديand I have
لوif صورواthey portrayed بنانَfingers ذاكَthat الزندِthe forearm
And she has ardent longing, and so do I.
She has coquetry while I but pine,
Had they portrayed the fingers of that forearm,
If they portrayed those cheeks divine,
لصورنيhe would have portrayed me فيهِin it يوسفغفنديYusufghafandi (name as written)
Yusufghafandi would have portrayed me in it.
They'd paint me as Yusuf Effendi.
