Wander in the age of bewilderment, and guide someone bewildered.

And pour your purest wine for your drinking companions as Kawthar.

And unfurl your psalter in the dark nights as a star

that renders the intractable among talismans luminous.

And weep your camel-driver's chant, for the roads are trackless wastes,

and guidance in the age of error is a fabrication.

What are you if no majesty enfolds you,

captivating hearts and swaying the minds of humankind?

What are you if we do not take you as a place of return

for the wayfarers, and a crossing to truth?

What are you if we do not await you as a message

whose knowledge has laid bare what was disguised?

Are you not al-Kinanah's full moon in its orbit,

    shining—are you not yourself al-Azhar?

O sheikh, journeying through the centuries,

triumphant—how many ages you have traversed there!

Lofty as an eagle in its heights,

whose throne was never upon the earth,

nor ever like a weak bird for whom the

dusty sky lay open, so it turned to posing as an eagle!

    nor ever like grasshoppers, chanting

to the ears of the dark depths, unseen themselves, and he unseen.

Rather, you were a sun, peerless in its morning radiance,

bestowing renewal and the most dazzling light.

And today, with the nights, you have become a bird,

worn out, reaching neither slopes nor summits.

Why do I see you dragging your steps, my master,

among the deserts, burdened and stumbling?

Sorrowful and anguished, heading for unknown wastes,

distraught and fallen back, you retreat backwards.

Has old age grievously wounded you with a piercing

thrust of its own, so you reined your horses back from night travel?

Or a robe with luxuriant sleeves in

an age of nakedness and the loosening of ties?

Or have you bowed beneath the tread of these cares,

and shaken out your palm, empty-handed and weeping?

And sat sending your sorrow to the ruins: no

friend consoled you, nor did a wayward man desist.

You admonish the deaf man, who has listened to his ignorance,

and treat a dead man who ought to be buried.

And medicine for the dead is a sign of idleness,

and calling to the deaf is selling what no one buys.

How I grieve for you because of the wolves who scaled

your most radiant prayer-niche and trampled the pulpit,

and brazenly howled verses of rancor,

and prophesied falsely and vomited abominations.

And chanted their litanies to one another, for falsehood in

them caws, while truth is a despised, miscarried child.

They seek it crooked, with an excess of grandiloquence,

and hermaphroditic eloquence and one-eyed jurisprudence.

Like the jester in the royal court—how often

he let down his braids and untied his waistcloth!

In vain he tries to relieve distress

from a frowning man, or to entertain Caesar.

Yet it is the abasement upon

which multitudes were molded, and which they relished for ages.

O sheikh, a stranger in your own land,

why not depart and pass beyond a world still more faithless!

For it is a mark of majesty to live exiled,

and of understanding to die purified.

And it is shameless for one to dwell amid abuse—

a man of insight—while slumber visits his eyelids!

Depart and leave us, stranger, for each of us

is a traitor to you, and the steadfast has turned away in retreat!

And the ape has become a monk among the people,

an ascetic, and the donkey-foal has become a lion!

Depart and leave us in the dark depths of our shame,

for shame has emerged from us, an object of disgust!

And ugliness has found in the skin of our faces

a homeland where it enjoys support and hospitality!

And falsehood—we are its witnesses by nature,

and deception—we are the ones who create it in embodied form!

And the dancers upon the ropes of sin are

we, and we are those who sold the Book in pursuit of civilization!

Those offering wares drawn from the forbidden,

and those setting up shop with the sacred laws!

    O sheikh, a stranger, I and

you are both cast aside in melancholy and foreboding.

We are two shoots of one root, setting out each morning amid hardships,

and returning at evening, bleeding seas from our anguish.

Neither has poetry untied my knot among the foreign-tongued,

woe to me!—nor has the prison of rhymes set me free.

Parched, I crouch in the dark depths of a trackless waste,

a shackled soul and a heart torn apart.

And the free man in the age of the rabble goes unrecognized:

he gives and is met with ingratitude, or speaks and is doubted!

So depart, for I am departing; perhaps we shall

encounter a world lush with grass and richly green.

Love spreads there with the breezes,

and purity dwells in consciences as a jewel.

For rock may grow tender, stubborn though it is,

so you see rain gush forth from its two palms.

And night may be kind, though it veils,

so you see it, despite the overcast gloom, appear moonlit.

And I see you smiling amid the gleams of morning light,

a rain-streaming melody that drenched a green horizon.

For you indeed are my horizon in love and my Kaaba,

and love of you is my religion, since I took my first steps bearing glad tidings.

And through you I turned toward you from you; for the expanse is nothing

but visions of you, and what has flowed is part of my love!

So forgive my madness and the fervor of my feelings,

for wandering is my tavern-keeper, and night travel my drinking companion!
