مَنwhoever يُخبِركَtells you بِسَبٍّof an insult عَنfrom أَخٍa brother
فَهُوَthen he الشاتِمُthe insulter لاnot مَنthe one who شَتَمَكinsulted you
Whoever tells you of an insult from a brother,
he is the insulter, not the one who insulted you.
ذاكَthat أَمرٌa matter لَمdid not يُواجِهكَconfront you بِهِwith it
إِنَّماonly اللَومُthe blame عَلىon مَنthe one who أَعلَمَكinformed you
That is something he did not say to your face;
the blame lies only with the one who told you.
إِنَّindeed ذاone possessing اللُؤمِbaseness إِذاwhen أَكرَمتَهُyou honor him
حَسِبَhe deemed الإِكرامَthe honor حَقّاًa right لَزِمَكbinding upon you
Indeed, a base man, when you honor him,
deems that honor a right binding upon you.
كيفwhy لمdid not ينصركَdefend you إنif كانhe was أخاًa brother
ذاpossessing حفاظٍloyalty عندَin the presence of منthe one who قدalready ظلمكwronged you
Why did he not defend you, if he was a brother
loyal to his bonds, in the presence of the one who wronged you?
فأهنهso humiliate him إنّهُfor he منout of لؤمِهِhis baseness
إنif تردهُyou rebuff him بهوانٍwith contempt أكرمكhe will honor you
So humiliate him, for in his baseness,
if you rebuff him with contempt, he will honor you.
