ثقيtrust (addressing a woman) بجميلin noble الصبرِpatience منيfrom me علىin enduring الدهرtime; fate
ولاand do not تثقيtrust (addressing a woman) بالصبرِin patience منّيfrom me علىin enduring الهجرِseparation
Trust in my noble patience with fate,
Trust in my patience with time,
And do not trust in my patience with separation.
But do not trust my patience with separation.

عيونُeyes الظباءgazelles العُفرِdust-colored بالبلدِin the land القفرِdesolate
My heart was struck, after fifty years,
The gazelle eyes of the wilderness struck my heart,
By the eyes of dust-colored gazelles in the desolate land.
After fifty arguments, in the barren land.
ولستُand I am not بميّالٍinclined إلىtoward جانبthe side of الغنىwealth
إذاif كانتis العلياءُlofty honor منfrom جانبِthe side of الفقرِpoverty
And I do not lean toward the side of wealth,
I am not inclined towards wealth,
If lofty honor lies on the side of poverty.
If nobility comes from the side of poverty.
وإنيand indeed I am لصبارindeed very patient علىwith ماينوبنيwhatever befalls me
وحسبكَand enough for you أنَّthat اللَهGod أثنىpraised علىupon الصبرِpatience
And I am indeed most patient with whatever befalls me,
I am patient with what befalls me,
And enough for you is that God has praised patience.
It suffices you that Allah praised patience.
ولكنّنيbut I am مُرُّbitter العداوةِenmity واترٌone who inflicts bereavement
كثيرُmany ذنوبِoffenses الشعرِpoetry والأسلِand spears السُمرِdark-brown
But I am bitter in enmity, a bringer of bereavement,
But I pass the days in bitterness,
With many offenses committed in verse and with dark-brown spears.
Much sin of poetry and images of idols.
رَميتُI hurled بهاwith them أركانَpillars قيسQays بنson of جحدرٍJahdar
فطحطحتُهاso I shattered them قذفَhurling المجانيقِcatapults بالصخرِwith rocks
I hurled them at the pillars of Qays ibn Jahdar,
I threw them at the pillars of Qays ibn Jaddar,
So I shattered them as catapults do by hurling rocks.
And I crushed them like stones from a catapult.
وماand not ظلمdid wrong الغوثيّal-Ghawthi بلrather أناI ظالمٌa wrongdoer
وهلand could كانever be فرخُa chick الماءِwater يثبتُstand firm للصقرِagainst the falcon
And al-Ghawthi did no wrong; rather, I am the wrongdoer.
Al-Ghowthi is not wrong, rather I am the oppressor,
And could a waterbird's chick ever stand its ground against a falcon?
Can the chick of water stand still for the eagle?
ألاbehold إنماonly أبكيI weep علىover الشعرِpoetry إِننيindeed I
أرىI see كلَّevery وطواطٍbat يُزاحمُjostles فيin الشعرِpoetry
Ah, I weep only for poetry; indeed, I
I only cry for poetry, as I
See every bat jostling for a place in poetry.
See every worthless person competing in it.
ومنand from دونِهِbefore him بحرٌa sea وليلٌand a night يلفّهُenfolds it
فماso what ظنهُhis expectation بالليلِof the night فيin لجّةِthe depths of البحرِthe sea
And before him lie a sea and a night that enfolds it;
Without it there is a sea surrounded by night,
So what does he expect of the night in the sea's depths?
What does he think of the night in the tumult of the sea?
إليكمkeep back, all of you إِليكمkeep back, all of you عنaway from لؤيLu'ayy بنson of غالبٍGhalib
فأنَّfor indeed لؤياًLu'ayy لاnot تبيتُspends the night علىwith وترِan unavenged wrong
Back! Back! Away from Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib!
To you, to you, away from Lawiyy ibn Ghalib,
For Lu'ayy will not pass the night with a wrong unavenged.
As Lawiyy does not spend the night tuned.
دعواleave alone (you all) الحيّةَthe serpent النضناضَtongue-flicking لاdo not تعرضواprovoke (you all) لهاher
فأنَّfor indeed المناياdeaths بينbetween أنيابهاher fangs الخضرِgreen
Leave the tongue-flicking serpent alone; do not provoke her,
Leave the hissing snake, do not expose yourselves to it,
For death lies between her green fangs.
For death is between its green fangs.
