لَطَيُّsurely, going hungry يَومٍa day وَلَيلَتَينِand two nights
وَلُبسُand wearing ثَوبَينِtwo garments بالِيَينِthreadbare
Surely, going hungry for a day and two nights
One day and two nights' hospitality,
And wearing two threadbare garments
And the wearing of two worn garments,
أَهوَنُmore bearable مِنthan مِنَّةٍa favor لِقَومٍfrom people
أَغُضُّI lower مِنهاbecause of it جُفونَeyelids عَينيof my eye
Is more bearable than a favor from people
Are lighter than the obligation of favors,
For which I lower my eyelids.
From people whose eyelids weigh more heavily than that upon me.
إِنّيindeed I وَإِنand though كُنتُI am ذاhaving عِيالٍdependents
قَليلَhaving little مالٍwealth كَثيرَhaving much دَينِdebt
Indeed, though I have dependents,
Though I am a man with a family to support,
Little wealth and much debt,
Of little wealth and many debts,
لَأَحمَدُI surely praise اللَهَGod حينَwhen صارَتhave come to be
حَوائِجيmy needs بَينَهُbetween Him وَبَينيand between me
I surely praise God, now that
Yet I thank God, now that
My needs have come to lie between Him and me.
My needs are only between Him and me.
