وَلُؤماًand baseness وَبُخلاًand stinginess عِندَover زادٍprovisions وَمِزوَدِand a provision-bag
Numayr, do you cower when the lances cross,
and show baseness and stinginess over provisions and a provision-bag,
وَمَنعَand withholding قِرىhospitality for الأَضيافِthe guests مِنfrom غَيرِother than عِلَّةٍan excuse
وَلاnor عَدَمٍpoverty إِلّاexcept حَذارَfor fear of التَعَوُّدِforming a habit
and withhold guests' fare, without excuse
or poverty, only for fear of making it a habit,
وَبَغياًand aggression عَلىagainst الجارِthe neighbor القَريبِnearby إِذاwhen طَراhe arrives
عَلَيكُمto you وَخَتلَand deceiving الراكِبِthe rider المُتَفَرِّدِtraveling alone
and wrong the near neighbor when he comes
to you, and deceive the solitary rider?
عَلىdespite أَنَّكُمthe fact that you تَرضَونَyou are content بِالذُلِّwith humiliation صاحِباًas a companion

وَتُعطونَand you concede مَنto whoever لاحاكُمُquarrels with you الضَيمَoppression عَنunder يَدِa hand's power
Yet you accept humiliation as a companion,
and meekly let whoever quarrels with you oppress you.
أَماindeed وَأَبيby my father إِنّاwe indeed لَنَعفوwe certainly forgive وَإِنَّناand we indeed
عَلىdespite ذاكَthat أَحياناًsometimes نَجورُwe act unjustly وَنَعتَديand we transgress
Indeed, by my father, we do forgive, and we
nonetheless sometimes act unjustly and transgress.
نَكيدُwe outwit العِداthe foes بِالحِلمِthrough forbearance مِنfrom غَيرِother than ذِلَّةٍabasement
وَنَغشىand we enter الوَغىbattle بِالصِدقِin earnest لاnot بِالتَوَعُّدِwith threats
We outwit foes through forbearance, without abasement,
and enter battle in earnest, not with threats.

Oppression has been driven from us by Mudarite souls,
pure-blooded, and by the spear-thrust of the fearless, defiant warrior.
وَإِنّاand we indeed لَمِنcertainly of قَيسِQays عَيلانَAylan فيin الَّتيthat which

And we are indeed of Qays Aylan, in the station that
is the utmost reach of might and nobility.
وَإِنَّand indeed لَناwe have بِالتُركِamong the Turks قَبراًa grave مُبارَكاًblessed

And among the Turks we have a blessed grave,
and in China a grave, the glory of every monotheist.
وَماand never نابَناafflicted us صَرفُthe changing fortune الزَمانِof time بِسَيِّدٍwith a chief's loss
بَكَيناwe wept عَلَيهِover him أَوunless يُوافيit comes بِسَيِّدِwith a chief
Nor has time's changing fortune bereaved us of a chief
whom we mourned, without bringing us another chief.
وَلَوand if أَنَّthat قَوماًa people يَسلَمونَcould be safe مِنَfrom الرَدىdeath

And if any people could be safe from death,
we would be safe—but death lies in ambush.

God has refused to guide Numayr to its right path,
and no one finds the right way without a guide.
