وَإِنّيand indeed I لَذوsurely possessed of وُدٍّaffection لِمَنfor whoever دامَendured وُدُّهُhis affection
وَجافٍand aloof لِمَنtoward whoever رامَsought الجَفاءَestrangement مَلولُquick to tire
Indeed, I am a man of affection toward one whose affection endures,
And I indeed bear affection for one whose affection endures,
but cold toward one who seeks estrangement, and quick to weary.
and am aloof toward one who seeks estrangement, quick to tire.
وَإِنَّand indeed اِمرَءاًa man يَأويtakes refuge إِلىin دارِa house of ذِلَّةٍhumiliation
تَعَبَّدُهُenslaves him فيهاin it الرَجاءَhope ذَليلُabject
And I am a man who takes refuge in an abode of abasement,
And indeed, a man who takes refuge in a house of humiliation,
where hope makes him its slave, abased.
where hope enslaves him, is abject.
وَفيand in اليَأسِgiving up hope مِنfrom ذُلِّthe abasement of المَطامِعِcovetous desires راحَةٌrelief
وَفيand among الناسِpeople مِمَّنfor one who لاdoes not يُحِبُّlove بَديلُa replacement
And in despair lies relief from the abasement of covetous desires,
And in giving up hope lies relief from the abasement of covetous desires,
and among people there is a substitute for one who does not love.
and among people is a replacement for one who does not love.
