غِنىwealth المالِof money يَوماًone day أَوor غِنىfreedom from need الحَدَثانِof fate (here, death)
I shall drive the pale camels at full speed until I am stopped
One day by riches, or by death's release from need.
فَلَلمَوتُfor death indeed خَيرٌis better مِنthan حَياةٍa life يُرىis seen لَهاin it
عَلىupon الحُرِّthe free man بِالإِقلالِthrough poverty وَسمُa brand of هَوانِhumiliation
For death is indeed better than a life in which one sees
Upon a free man, through poverty, the brand of humiliation.
مَتىwhenever يَتَكَلَّمhe speaks يُلغَis disregarded حُسنُthe beauty of كَلامِهِhis speech
وَإِنand if لَمnot يَقُلhe speaks قالواthey say عَديمُdevoid of بَيانِeloquence
Whenever he speaks, the beauty of his speech is disregarded;
And if he says nothing, they say, 'He has no eloquence.'
كَأَنَّas though الغِنىwealth عَنon behalf of أَهلِهِits owners بورِكَblessed be الغِنىwealth
بِغَيرِwithout لِسانٍa tongue ناطِقٌspeaking بِلِسانِwith a tongue
It is as though wealth, on its owners' behalf—blessed be wealth!—
Though tongueless, were speaking with a tongue.
