ولاnor البلاغةeloquence فيin الأكثارprolixity بالخطبِin speeches
Generosity does not come from abundant wealth or lineage,
Nor does eloquence lie in a profusion of speeches.

ولاnor الأمانةtrustworthiness عنfrom إرثِinheritance أبٍa father فأبthen a father
Nor does courage come from physique or toughness,
Nor is trustworthiness inherited from father after father.

Rather, these are high aspirations that have led to [success],
In all these things, through an innate, unacquired disposition.

And sustenance flows by decree until an appointed end,
Through incapacity and resourcefulness, neglect and striving.

And people, as I see it, matter to me for their own merits,
Not for tombs, ancestors, or lineage.

Indeed, though my wealth is scant, my aspirations have never stopped
Short of noble character and good conduct.

Steadfast in doing right with wealth I freely gave,
And patient with time through hardship and deceit.

O friend, whose loss has left me no strength to endure,
I was abandoned after you; time indeed has its reversals.

And for the dwellings, the ruined camps, and the sand dunes,

And for the phantom that once would visit me by night,
And for drinking companions, pleasures, and rapture.

And once, together with Shaʿbān, I was a man
Who dispelled distress on the day of battle.
