And they said, 'If only you would praise a generous young man!'

So I said, 'And how am I to find a generous young man?'

I have tested people for fifty years,

and a man of experience is authority enough for you.

No one can be counted on for a day of kindness,

nor does anyone show kindness to a close friend.

A young man pleases me, and I think well of him,

then I uncover in him a base man.

They copied one another, and so became

sons of the same two parents, cut from a single hide.

Then people circled al-Hasan ibn Sahl,

as they circled Zamzam and al-Hatim.

And they said, 'A lord who gives lavishly

and dispels the anguish of a man choked with grief.'

So I said: My verse has gone forth condemning the people,

and the healthy may be harmed through the sick.

And no report based on my conjectures

is more reassuring than a discerning man's firsthand sight.

So I came—for affairs have their promising signs—

and the white-blazed will not be confused with the all-black.

If what has spread about him is true,

I shall return equipped for a settled life.

And if it is otherwise, I shall praise my Lord,

and doubt will leave a wise man.

It is not hopes that draw me toward him,

but a noble man is brother to a noble man.
