And I had a friend, and to him I was
more tender than a father toward his child.

أَو كَذارِعٍ نيطَت إِلى عَضُدِ
We were like a leg with which a foot strides,
or like a forearm attached to an upper arm.

we had no need of anyone.

Until, when my hand sought aid from his hand,
I was like one seeking aid from a lion's paw.
