Abu Jaʿfar, O son of illustrious chieftains,
O Abu Ja'far, O son of generous people
A need has arisen, and a noble man seeks refuge with a noble man.
A need has appeared, and the free man seeks refuge with the free
وَقَدand indeed لَبِسَتنيclothed me مِنكَfrom you بِالأَمسِyesterday نِعمَةٌa favor
فَهَلso, will…? لَكَfor you فيin أُخرىanother عَوانِa matron (a repeated favor) إِلىbeside بِكرِa maiden (a first favor)
And yesterday a favor from you clothed me.
Yesterday you clothed me with your favor
Will you then grant another—a matron beside a maiden?
So could you do the same again today?
عَلىon the understanding أَنَّهُthat it إِنif أَمكَنَتcan be granted أَوor تَعَذَّرَتproves impossible
فَإِنَّكَthen indeed you بَينَbetween الشُكرِgratitude مِنّيfrom me وَالعُذرِand being excused
Yet whether it can be granted or proves impossible,
Whether it happens or not,
You shall have either my gratitude or my readiness to excuse you.
You have my thanks or my excuse
