لَو دامَ مَجلِسَها بفَقدِ حَميمِ
And one with whom the days fly by—her companion wished
Her friend wished the days to linger, though parted
Her company would last, even at the cost of losing a dear friend.
From the one he loved, yet joy was not then denied him.

Enamored of her, he harbors an old longing,
With her he tasted long the wine of fancy free,
Grown old, though the young man has not known her long.

One of those who offer the lover draughts of grief
For brother mine she clad herself in yellow robes
With a beauty's coquetry and a white gazelle's eye.
Of tribute, at a mime's soft glances feigning passion.

Golden-hued, one of al-Jiwa's wild cows, as though
Her dress the tawniness of cowhide showed, as though
Bashfulness had left upon her a sick person's pallor.
Modesty had cast off her cloak, descrying shame in it.
