Can you not visit, while free of love,

Sound of heart, the sister of Banu Ghifar?

For she has never ceased to lend you her eyes,

And so gives you death in secret.

You grow distracted amid the people's talk, until

Some of your kin discern what you conceal.

Then die, O heart: you have no strength to resist—

No resistance to save you, nor any means of flight.

For I have never seen a blood-avenger like me,

So loving—or so fair a quarry for vengeance.

When they both mention my blood-foe, I say, 'May rain bless

My blood-foe, wearer of rings and bracelet!'

Nor has she acknowledged my blood, to answer for it

With a pledge in my snares, or a debt beyond recovery.

And the reproaching women have claimed that my day

And yours at al-Muhassab, with its pebbles,

Were burdens; then you maintained they were not,

And said to one given to quarrelling and dispute:

'You have lied! A greeting is no false utterance,

Nor is the sacred day a day of vengeance,

Nor is our greeting in ritual consecration a crime,

Nor is noble love a disgrace to us.'

So if we do not meet you, may the morning clouds water

Your land—and may the rain-laden night clouds water it too.
