وَإِنّيand indeed I قَدalready نَصَحتُI gave counsel فَلَمyet did not تُصَدِّقyou believe
بِنُصحيin my counsel وَاِعتَدَدتَand you grew conceited فَماso not تُباليyou care
And I have indeed advised you, yet you did not believe
Though I advised, you would not believe
my advice; you grew conceited and care nothing.
My counsel, and recklessly on you cleave,
أَرانيI see myself قَدalready بَداbecame apparent ليto me أَنَّthat نُصحيmy counsel
لِغَيِّكَbecause of your waywardness وَاِعتِدادِكَand your conceit فيin ضَلالِfutility
I find it has become clear to me that my counsel,
It seems my advice for your misdeeds
because of your waywardness and conceit, is in vain.
And recklessness leads you astray, I grieve,
فَكَمso how long هَذاthis أَذودُكَI ward you off عَنfrom قِطاعيbreaking ties with me
كَتَذويدِlike driving away المُحَلّأَةِthe camels kept from water النِهالِthirsty
So how long must I keep deterring you from breaking with me,
How much do I ward you from highwaymen?
as thirsty camels are driven away from the water?
As acacias guard the saplings now and then,
فَلاso do not تَبغِseek الذنوبَfaults عَلَيَّagainst me وَاِقصِدand decide
لِأَمرِكَconcerning your course مِنof قِطاعٍsevering ties أَوor وِصالِkeeping ties
So do not seek faults against me, and decide
Seek not misdeeds against me, keep your aim
your course: either breaking ties or keeping them.
True, be it parting or union, my friend,
فَسَوفَso, in time أُريI will show خِلالَكَyour traits مَنthose whom تُصافيyou befriend
إِذاwhen فارَقَتنيyou part from me وَتَرىand you will see خِلاليmy traits
So I shall show your traits to those you befriend
I'll show your true nature when we part,
when you part from me, and you will see my traits.
And you behold my nature and my heart,
وَإِنَّand indeed جَزاءَthe recompense عَهدِكَyour pledge إِذwhen تُوَلّيyou turn away
بِأَنby the fact that أُغضيI turn a blind eye وَأَسكُتَand I keep silent لاnot أُباليI care
And indeed, the recompense for your pledge, when you turn away,
For breaking faith when you turn away
is that I turn a blind eye and stay silent, caring nothing.
Is to be silent and uncaring, I say
