ماwhat لسلميwith Salma يهزهاsways her الخيلاءconceit
يتهادىsways gracefully بهاwith her الهوىpassion والهواءand the breeze
What has come over Salma, swayed by conceit?
Why does my Salma sway with pride
Passion and the breeze bear her gently along.
As desire and passion around her glide?
لمnot تكنwas قبلbefore هكذاlike this العذراءthe maiden
أوor مغريهاwhat entices her أنناthat we are الأسراءthe captives

The maiden was never like this before.
She was never thus, the innocent bride
Or is she enticed by our being captives?
Or seduced by our being captive
أوor مغويهاwhat beguiles her منهمfrom them الإطراءflattery
خدعوهاthey deceived her بقولهمby their saying حسناءa beauty
Or is it their flattery that beguiles her?
Or misled by their flattering guise
They deceived her by calling her a beauty.
Deceived by their call, the fair prize

And beauties are beguiled by praise.
Passion snares the singing girls with praise
My heart alone lay in her two palms.
My heart was at peace enjoying her

I alone lived happily in love.
Alone in love I lived happy
She was my throne, and I was al-Rashid.
She was my throne, I the wise

How often I sang of her in verse!
With verses I sang her admiring tunes
So I drew your eyes toward her.
Drawing all eyes to her, a boon

Why, do you think, did she pretend to forget my name when
She forgot me when to her
the names of her lovers multiplied?
Crowded names in her ardent craze

Every one is enamored of my Salma, like me.
All passion-mad for Salma like me
Every one has lost his reason in love.
Lost in love's lunacy

They jostled me and harassed her because of me.
Vying for me, pressing for me
They jostled me and taught her to be unjust.
Teaching her to shy from me

So she feigned forgetting what had passed between us.
Forgetting what was hers and mine
If she sees me, she turns away, as though there had never
Sees me and turns her eyes away

Conceit entered her soul, and she grew haughty.

And she held herself aloof from her lovers and swaggered.
Beyond her lover, distant in all
Hearts appeared before her, and she roamed among them.
Hearts flocked so she grew cold

She shone like a sun among those lovesick for her.
Shining mid veils like sunrise gold
They reminded her of what she had done yesterday:
Recalling not her ways of old

A glance, then a smile, then a greeting,
A glance, a smile, greetings said
then talk, then an appointment, then a meeting.
Words exchanged, a tryst made

Salma she, as I knew before
And I am one whose passion grows in loving her.
And I the love-mad evermore

Still holding my reins as of yore
She is the very same Salma; she is Salma.
Salma herself, none but Salma

She is Salma, and I add nothing to what you know.
Salma, I say no more
The day we were together—do not ask how we were—
Day when we roamed as we wished

Exchanging the love that nourished
That time between Salma and me,
That time between Salma and I

Would that today would replay
The day she came, when we were alone,

and chastity kept watch over us,
With modesty our ward and guard
I grew weary wrestling with passions.
I tired asking passions regarded

ساءلتنيshe asked me هلwhether لمnot تزلceased بيwith me صباpassionately in love
She confessed her love to me, and I grew more in love.
Revealed my love so love knotted
She asked me, “Are you still lovesick for me?”
Asked, does your youth still bloom?

I said, “My heart knows best”; she called, and it answered.
I said, my heart knows, called me, come
She examined it and did not find it free of love.
Probed it and found no room

She then showed tenderness toward me.
Showed then a kindness sublime
She tugged with me at the robe of defiance and said:
Drawing me from the path of crime

For chaste hearts are like the wind's curls
