The song grew sweet, and the lute's melody grew tender.

In the air, between brief and sustained notes.

And his garden caught the intoxicated man's gaze,

And birds set it dancing with plaintive warbling.

Wine carried him away—in a cheek and in a cup,

And in the languid glances of her dark eyes.

The breeze blew over the branches, scattering

Their flowers and casting them toward the graceful maidens.

As though the flowers in its grounds were carpets,

Spread for the [footsteps?] of shy, tender maidens.

Strands [description unclear] were stretched from the full moon,

Among the thickets, from branch to branch.

I forget, yet have not forgotten the delight of a maiden's company,

A human girl—nay, an angel placed among tender maidens.

I sensed her turning toward her lovesick admirer,

Since I was drawn by a kindness never known before.

She presumed upon my yearning; love for her drew me down,

And coquetry guided her, so she yielded to my binding her.

Love for her lodged in my heart, and it became

A precious treasure; she barred the way to sound judgment.

Whence my intoxication, with my beloved as my drinking companion?

Is it from you, O maiden, or from the daughter of a grape cluster?

In her saliva dwells what dwells in pure wine, just as

In her mouth dwells what dwells upon the neck.

My verse lies between amorous praise and passion for her,

And her hair between loose locks and curls.

O lady of tresses, my feelings are ensnared within them.

Whatever you wish, ensnare; whatever you wish, hunt.

It is you I love; have mercy on me, a lovesick man.

Indeed, you and I have needed no affirmation.

Clasp it to your breast, letting its melody move us to song,

And use it as a skilled physician to dress my wounds.

Never did her fingertips make a string of it speak

Without pointing to signs of divine oneness.

So, through her and from her, as her feelings grew tender,

The song grew sweet, and the lute's melody grew tender.
