سعيا لأجلك في الرعيل المهتدي
ياO طفلchild هذاthis اليومday ياO رجلman الغدtomorrow
يا طفل هذا اليوم يا رجل الغد
Striving for your sake among the rightly guided ranks,
O child of today, O man of tomorrow.
لبيكat your service متبوعone followed by القلوبhearts محركاstirring
لبيك متبوع القلوب محركا
أوتارهاtheir strings لتروحso they may go at evening فيكfor you وتغتديand go at dawn
أوتارها لتروح فيك وتغتدي
At your service, leader of hearts, stirring
Their strings, that they may go forth for you at dusk and dawn.
فيكin you الرجاءhope مجسمembodied فاحفظso preserve لهfor it
فيك الرجاء مجسم فاحفظ له
بينwithin الجوانحthe breast قبسةa spark المستوقاءunclear; perhaps “the fire-kindler”
بين الجوانح قبسة المستوقاء
In you hope is embodied; preserve for it
Within your breast a spark from the fire-kindler.
ماwhatever ضلwas lost عنto أبويكyour parents فأحسنso perfect ردهits restoration
ما ضل عن أبويك فأحسن رده
مستوجداbringing into being ماwhat الآنnow ليسis not بموجدin existence
مستوجدا ما الآن ليس بموجد
Restore well whatever your parents lost,
Bringing into being what does not now exist.
اسعدmake happy بلادكyour country ماas much as استطعتyou can فليسfor … is not منone whose
اسعد بلادك ما استطعت فليس من
شقيتhas become wretched بلادهhis country ياO بنيmy son بمسعدhappy
شقيت بلاده يا بني بمسعد
Make your country happy as best you can; for no one
Whose country suffers, my son, can be happy.
إياكbeware والرقand bondage المثينunclear; perhaps “oppressive” فإنماfor indeed
إياك والرق المثين فإنما
ولدwas born آبنthe son of آدمAdam وهوwhile he is غيرnot معبدenslaved
ولد آبن آدم وهو غير معبد
Beware of oppressive bondage, for
The son of Adam was born unenslaved.
واملأand fill وطابكyour milk-skins بالمعارفwith knowledge إنهاfor it is
واملأ وطابك بالمعارف إنها
أسthe foundation of العلاeminence واربأand rise عنabove الجهلignorance الرديbase
أس العلا واربأ عن الجهل الردي
And fill your milk-skins with knowledge, for it is
The foundation of eminence; rise above base ignorance.
وانظرand look بإمعانwith close attention لآثارat the traces of الألىthose who
وانظر بإمعان لآثار الألى
عملواthey acted بماupon what أوصىenjoined المهيمنthe Guardian واقتدand follow their example
عملوا بما أوصى المهيمن واقتد
And look closely at the traces left by those
Who acted upon what the Guardian enjoined, and follow their example.
واشرحand gladden خواطرthe hearts of منone who تسربلclothed himself بالأسىin sorrow
واشرح خواطر من تسربل بالأسى
ليراكso he may see you بالبردin the mantle الموشىembroidered ترتديyou wear
ليراك بالبرد الموشى ترتدي
And gladden the heart of one robed in sorrow,
That he may see you wearing the embroidered mantle.
بينamid العواصفthe storms ظلhe kept on يبذرsowing زرعهhis seed
بين العواصف ظل يبذر زرعه
كالفلكlike a ship ألقىcast فوقupon بحرa sea مزبدfoaming
كالفلك ألقى فوق بحر مزبد
Amid the storms he kept on sowing his seed,
Like a ship cast upon a foaming sea.
أينعتripened رغمdespite الذارياتthe scattering winds بحقلهin his field
أينعت رغم الذاريات بحقله
فالكمand so the calyx مفترsmiling open عنto reveal الزهرthe blossoms النديdewy
فالكم مفتر عن الزهر الندي
In his field it ripened, despite the scattering winds;
And the calyx smiles open to reveal dewy blossoms.
سبحانglory to منشيكyour Maker الحفيظthe Preserver ومنand whoever وعىheeded
سبحان منشيك الحفيظ ومن وعى
آيthe verses of الكتابthe Book كفاهHe spared him شرthe evil of المعتديthe aggressor
آي الكتاب كفاه شر المعتدي
Glory to your Maker, the Preserver! And whoever heeds
The Book’s verses is spared the aggressor’s evil.
لاno ريبdoubt فيهin it هدىguidance وربكand your Lord حافظpreserving
لا ريب فيه هدى وربك حافظ
لهfor it وهوand it is فيناamong us موثلunclear; perhaps “a refuge” المسترشدthe seeker of guidance
له وهو فينا موثل المسترشد
There is no doubt in it: it is guidance, and your Lord preserves
It; and among us it is the refuge of those seeking guidance.
اليومtoday منone whose تحفلcelebrate بمثلكone like you قومهhis people
اليوم من تحفل بمثلك قومه
أرضتhave pleased محمدهاtheir Muhammad وربand the Lord of محمدMuhammad
أرضت محمدها ورب محمد
Today, the people who celebrate one like you
Have pleased their Muhammad and Muhammad’s Lord.
للّهto God; an exclamation of praise مصدرسةa school (apparent misspelling) غذيتyou were nourished بدرهاwith its milk
للّه مصدرسة غذيت بدرها
أكرمhow noble! بعرفانيةʿIrfāniyya للمبتديfor the beginner
أكرم بعرفانية للمبتدي
God be praised for the school whose milk has nourished you!
How noble is ʿIrfāniyya for the beginner!
هيit غرسthe planting of ذاكthat الملجأrefuge الخيريcharitable الذيwhich
هي غرس ذاك الملجأ الخيري الذي
فيهin it لذيfor one in الإعوازneed أيسرthe readiest موردwellspring
فيه لذي الإعواز أيسر مورد
It is a sapling of that charitable refuge where
Those in want find the readiest wellspring.
لستI am not المعرفone enlightening جاهلاan ignorant person منfrom بينكمamong you
لست المعرف جاهلا من بينكم
أوor طارقاknocking فيكمamong you لبابat a door موصدbolted
أو طارقا فيكم لباب موصد
I am not enlightening an ignorant man among you,
Nor knocking among you at a bolted door.
أنتمyou وحسبيand that suffices me الناهضونthe ones who rise to act فبرهنواso demonstrate
أنتم وحسبي الناهضون فبرهنوا
عنconcerning همةthe resolve of الحرthe free man السخيthe generous المنجدthe bringer of aid
عن همة الحر السخي المنجد
You are those who rise to act—and that suffices me—so show
The resolve of a free, generous man who comes to others’ aid.
ليسis not العطاءgiving منfrom الفضولsurplus سماحةgenerosity
ليس العطاء من الفضول سماحة
حتىuntil تجودyou give freely بماof what وجدتهyou found it فيin اليدthe hand
حتى تجود بما وجدته في اليد
Giving from surplus is not generosity
Until you freely give what you have in hand.
قوميmy people بنيsons of الخضراءthe Green Land كمhow often قامواthey undertook بماwhat
قومي بني الخضراء كم قاموا بما
يرضيpleases المروءةchivalry فاكتسواso they clothed themselves بالسؤددin glory
يرضي المروءة فاكتسوا بالسؤدد
My people, sons of the Green Land—how often they have done
What pleases chivalry, and so clothed themselves in glory!
لمdid not ترضyou accept لاnot; apparently intended as “except” بالمعاليamong the heights مقعداa seat
لم ترض لا بالمعالي مقعدا
فاستشهدso call as witness التاريخhistory عناfor us يشهدit will testify
فاستشهد التاريخ عنا يشهد
You have accepted no seat except among the heights;
So call history to testify for us: it will bear witness.
ياO آلpeople of تونسTunis أيدواconfirm ماwhat قلتهI said it
يا آل تونس أيدوا ما قلته
فيكمof you لعمريby my life لستI am not غيرother than مؤيدa supporter
فيكم لعمري لست غير مؤيد
O people of Tunis, confirm what I have said
Of you; by my life, I am but a supporter.
اعتدتمyou are accustomed to الإخلاصsincerity منيfrom me صادحاsinging aloud
اعتدتم الإخلاص مني صادحا
بالشعرin poetry فيكمabout you موفياfulfilling بالموعدthe promise
بالشعر فيكم موفيا بالموعد
You are accustomed to sincerity from me as I sing aloud
In verse about you, fulfilling my promise.
هذيthese مواقفكمyour occasions to act فوفّواso fulfill حقّهاtheir due
هذي مواقفكم فوفّوا حقّها
دمتمmay you endure ودامand may endure العودthe return منهاfrom them الأحمديAhmadi; pertaining to Ahmad
دمتم ودام العود منها الأحمدي
These are your moments to act; give them their full due.
May you endure, and may their Ahmadi return endure.
