    فيك يلغى العذل

    Love verse about you grows sweet;

    reproach concerning you is dismissed.

  2. أنت فينا زهرة

    أنت فينا بلبل

    You are a flower among us;

    you are a nightingale among us.

  3. الشقيق في فم

    حل فيه العسل

    The anemone is in a mouth

    where honey has settled.

  4. إيه في فيها الشفا

    فاشربوه وكلوا

    Ah, in her mouth is healing;

    so drink it and eat.

  5. وردة الخد التي

    غرستها القبل

    The cheek’s rose, which

    kisses have planted,

  6. سلبت عقلي الذي

    قد رمته المقل

    stole my mind, which

    the eyes had already struck.

  7. سائلوها في الهوى

    في الهوى عنها سلوا

    Ask her about love;

    in love, ask about her.

  8. فأنا الصب بها

    وهي عندي الأمل

    For I am enamored of her,

    and she is my hope.

  9. لست أسلوها ولا

    يعتريني الكلل

    I do not cease loving her, nor

    does weariness overtake me.

  10. لست أشكوها ولا

    حام حولي الملل

    I do not complain of her, nor

    has boredom hovered around me.

  11. سار وجدي مثلما

    سار فيها المثل

    My passion spread, just as

    the proverb about her spread.

  12. نظر اللاحي لها

    فكساه الخجل

    The reproacher looked at her,

    and shame clothed him.

  13. قلت ماذا قال مع

    ذرة يا رجل

    I said, “What?” He said, “Par—

    —don me, man!

  14. بلبليك البابلي

    أنا منه ثمل

    Your Babylonian nightingale—

    I am drunk on it.”

  15. قلت عفوا قف هنا

    أو ترى ما العمل

    I said, “Pardon me, stop here!

    Or what do you think is to be done?

  16. كم أناس قبلنا

    في الغرام اقتتلوا

    How many people before us

    have fought one another for love!”

  17. فإذا بي وهي قد

    خطرت تعتدل

    Then suddenly, there I was, while she had

    come sauntering, holding herself upright;

  18. وكلانا عندها

    شاخص منذهل

    and both of us before her

    stood staring, bewildered,

  19. يترجّى نفحة

    وهو منها وجل

    each hoping for a breath,

    yet afraid of her.

  20. ساءلتنا ما جرى

    وعلى م الجدل

    She asked us, “What happened,

    and what is the dispute about?”

  21. قلت لي مزاحم

    وهو لا يحتمل

    I said, “I have a rival,

    and he is intolerable.

  22. فاحكمي ما بيننا

    فيك ما لي بدل

    So judge between us:

    I have no substitute for you.”

  23. قالت الأمر انجلى

    الحبيب الأول

    She said, “The matter is clear:

    the first one is the beloved.”
