يسبي العقول ترنحا ودلالا
Look upon Mount al-Manar at a gazelle,
Behold the gazelle on the Mount of Manar
Who captivates minds with swaying and coquetry.
Bewitching minds, swaying gently and coquettishly

He has within hearts a quiver for his arrows;
It has a tenderness in hearts for its arrows
And here for you is the love-stricken heart as an example.
And for you, the heart of an admirer is an example

Behold, as I beheld, the beauties in him:
See how I saw in it beauty
Beguiling, they clothe beauty in beauty.
Allurement that adorns beauty with beauty

I sheltered him in the heart, which is his lair;
I sheltered it in my heart, and it was like a temple
Then why do the eyelids fill it with arrowheads?
So why do the eyelids cast it away like blades?

والحب يكسب ربه الإذلالا
My soul humbled itself before him, though I had been proud.
I humbled myself before it and I wanted to resist it
And love brings humiliation to its possessor.
And love makes its lord humbling

In love, mine is an ʿUdhri purity.
For me in passion there is the chastity of excuses
But for chastity, I would have sought union with him.
If not for virtue, I would have sought union from it

By God, what a mouth of well-arranged pearls
Between its two pearl-strands, the lips' dark tint gleams.
Between its fine hair that hangs down

Those possessed by passion fall before him in reverence.
Those passionate about it bow down in veneration

Between him and me, in passionate longing, is a standstill;
Between me and it there was a long standstill in my youth
It has lasted long, yet I have not even won a postponement from him.
And I did not gain what I longed for from it

So I returned with only the two slippers, in a worse plight.
But I went back in the most miserable state
