Nothing stirred you but the proud spirit of noble men.

You were provoked only by the spirit of the hunt

وإن توسعت في الدوحات مقتطفا

وإن توسعت في الدوحات مقتطفا

فالزهر لا يجتني إلا من العود

And though you range widely among great trees, gathering blossoms,

And if you picked broadly in the paintings

Flowers are gathered only from the bough.

The flower is not picked but from the branch

ففي الشمول انتشاء لا تكيفه

ففي الشمول انتشاء لا تكيفه

ما كان مفعوله في ألف عنقود

ما كان مفعوله في ألف عنقود

For wine holds an exhilaration you cannot define;

For in inclusiveness is a diffusion you cannot regulate

Its effect was not present in a thousand grape clusters.

What was made to function in a thousand clusters

والنحل من بعضه ما فيه مصلحة

والنحل من بعضه ما فيه مصلحة

وما الحرير يرى إلا من الدود

وما الحرير يرى إلا من الدود

And from some bees comes something beneficial,

And the bees get from some of it what benefits them

And silk is seen to come only from worms.

And silk is seen only from the worm

وما المعادن إلا من نتائجها

وما المعادن إلا من نتائجها

والماء ينبع من أعماق جلمود

والماء ينبع من أعماق جلمود

And mines are known only by what they yield;

And minerals are only from their derivatives

And water wells up from deep within a boulder.

And water springs from the depths of stillness

لولا النبوة والإرسال واسطة

لولا النبوة والإرسال واسطة

ما كان ربك في الدنيا بمعبود

ما كان ربك في الدنيا بمعبود

Without the mediation of prophethood and the sending of messengers,

Were it not for prophethood and sending intermediaries

Your Lord would not have been worshipped in this world.

Your Lord would not have been worshipped in the world

لذا تفيأت في الأظلال وارفها

لذا تفيأت في الأظلال وارفها

عساي منك أرى تحقيق مقصودي

عساي منك أرى تحقيق مقصودي

So I took shelter in the fullest of shades,

So I took shelter in the shade and its expanse

Hoping to see my aim fulfilled through you.

Hopefully I will see my purpose fulfilled through you

لولا العناوين لم تبلغك مألكة

لولا العناوين لم تبلغك مألكة

ومثلك الدهر عنوان على الجود

ومثلك الدهر عنوان على الجود

Without addresses, no message would have reached you;

Were it not for titles, the angels would not have reached you

And one like you is forever a sign of generosity.

And the likes of you are titled over generosity

هذا اختياري وحاشا أن أخيب به

ظنا وإن يك سعيي غير محمود

This is my choice—and far be it that it should dash
