And a woman with a face—God creates what He wills—

It shone forth; my gaze swerved toward it and grew enraptured.

To me she is the full moon, yet her radiance does not wane

By day; she swayed in grace like a gazelle fawn.

Her head wore a cap, save for hanging tresses

That keep her busy awhile—may she never cease wishing.

God, how lovely it is when she busies herself

With it, whenever it falls with the wind or moves.

Her book turns over between her two palms,

Like my heart, which fluttered in my breast because of her.

    فما كان أجراها انطلاقا وأدهشا

    The electric tram set off with us;

How swiftly it set off, and how astonishing it was!

I see it as a lovesick man carrying his beloved,

Trying to hurry, taking trembling steps.

I wished the journey were on a she-donkey,

Walking with both riders from morning until evening.

Love for her flowed between my ribs, through my blood,

As though passion for her had been born with my very being.

So suppose she gives me the narcotic: I

Would deem it invigorating, to please the beloved.

How sweet the electric tram was with her there!

And after her—alas!—how desolate it was!

    Whenever she turns away, the lovesick man bursts into tears;

Will she then comfort him when he bursts into sobs?

The electric tram delights her companion, and delights me

When I am its driver or inspector.

Blessed, then, is one like me, driving it thus,

With her beside him, honoring him, when night grows dark.

When she boards it, her beauty's Harut becomes

A disturbance to the passengers' peace within.

I spared my tale-bearers: love poetry, before them,

Over the wire of my verse, betrayed me to the world.
