Come to me, O my pen.

Come, for my pain has overwhelmed me.

For you are my hand when I gesture,

And you are my mouth when I cry out.

And you are the confidant of my sighs

And my groans and the pulse of my blood.

And you, when I weep in sorrow, are

My tears, overflowing in my words.

And you, when I yearn with passion,

And sing of love, are my melody.

And you are the refuge of my hopes,

When my resolve falls short of them.

I confide to you what weighs me down

    Of calamities and afflictions.

So you listen to me without impatience,

    Or boredom, or weariness.

I have carried you in the cause of truth,

    And literature and values.

    And I was—and still am—nourished by them,

    A suckling infant, unweaned.

I am enamored of them, even if they wound

My hopes and shatter my dream.

And I love them despite the pains,

    And hardship and sickness.

And I journey by night through the path's darkness,

With my banner held aloft by them,

    As the guide traveled by

The star's light in the darkness.
