You turned away because your cheek is smooth,

And you grew proud because your eyes are kohl-dark.

And it pleased you that your body is pampered,

While my body is wasted to the bone and gaunt.

So, O sister of the desert gazelle when it is frightened,

And sister of the bān bough when it sways,

Perhaps a phantom of you will visit my bed at night.

Yet a visit from it is far beyond hope, for it is miserly.

And may I have a sip of the coolness of your gleam?

And where is a path to reach the stars?

    فكيف إذَا ما آن مِنْكِ رَحيلُ

    I see you bent on forsaking me while you remain;

How will it be, then, when it is time for you to leave?

My companions say: that is the bān tree and the sandy bend.

So do not hold back tears when they flow.

For the campsite has a claim through those I once knew,

While they dwelt there in those domed tents.

And though they made their home in Tihāmah and I went up to Najd, away from them,

Still, the burning grief from you in my heart never fades.

May God curse a life whose people complain of drought,

While in Rimaʿ the rain of generosity pours down.
