When will your reproach and estrangement end,

Now that solace has waned and patience has run out?

Stop, then remember what passed between us yesterday.

For many a person of great renown is softened by remembrance.

And do not neglect the days of youth that passed

Long ago—how fine that time and age were!

Do you go to bed angry every day, as though

Any gladness in it were forbidden to me?

What angers you, and what has

Made your aloofness and pride persist so long?

Have the slanderers told you of me? Yet they have—

By your honor—no certain knowledge of me, nor experience.

Or have you chosen to display weariness and aversion?

For I have no escape from loving you, nor any excuse.

I wish I were an earring hanging

Upon you, and a necklace of yours by which dawn is unveiled.

Or else a perfume which, when you breathe it in,

    Drenches your hair-partings and tresses.

For blades have never wrought the havoc your eye has wrought,

Nor has wine done what your saliva has done.

Whenever you touch wood—I reckon it a remedy—

Green leaves flourish at its tips.

And if a drop from your mouth were placed in the sea,

That sea would become solid honey.

And if a rock touched your skin, it would come to have

A river in every corner of its sides.

    فلما انقضى مَا بَنَنَا سكنَ الدهرُ

    Time strove with all its might against what lay between me and you;

Then, when what lay between us ended, Time grew still.

And I came to you, complaining of the wrong your coldness had done me,

So you decreed that you would do me justice at the Resurrection.
