    وكلاً سقاناه بكأسيهما الدهر

    We lived for a time in poverty and in wealth;

And Time made us drink both from their two cups.

We grew no more oppressive toward a kinsman

through our wealth, nor did poverty detract from our ancestral honor.

And all my life, I have never reproached one who erred,

out of concern for him, lest the bridle tighten upon him.

Nor do I wrong my cousin if my brothers remain

trustworthy, while Time has carried off his brothers.

And I know that wealth departs and returns,

and stories and renown are what remain of wealth.

And the ever-revolving sphere has its turn with mankind,

as they have said, and one affair follows another.

And people have said, 'Had Hatim

wished to keep his wealth, he would have had plenty.'
