The mourning of doves upon the branches saddens me.

And lightning laughs at times, making me weep.

What had I to do with the ban-tree's slender bough, that I should love it?

What had I to do with the arrow of a glance, that it should strike me?

O dwelling of Zaynab, while the world brings separation,

I greeted within you a gazelle who does not greet me.

Would that I knew who could cure me of it! [Reading uncertain.]

even something milder than this would have sufficed me.

And I have long passed about your dwelling,

thirsty—if only the cupbearer were generous and gave me drink.

She appeared before me, swaying like a spear of al-Khatt,

slender-waisted, her flanks dancing with suppleness.

What wonders! What are these tresses? What

are these collarbones, in beauty and adornment?

Supple figures and pomegranates of breasts, alongside

roses of cheeks and apples of the orchards.

And one who reproached me for you, when I described to him

your eyes, turned to console me with his own.

what ailed me; through me, what torments me tormented him.

You enthralled him as you enthralled me, with a mouth

and a joined brow like a bow of the Turks.

Glory to the Creator of this waist, twined

like a braided rein, and of this most wide-eyed of the wide-eyed!

    This mouth and hair, this upper chest, have tormented me;

this waist, by God, has driven me from my faith.

Swaying and gliding—not like this do they sway,

the branches of Nu'man amid the dunes of Yabrin.

They said, "You have settled with the wearer of earrings." I told them,

"The thrusts of slender forms and Rudayni spears slay me."

from your mouth—[unclear wording] would quench me in the ranks.

The hue of peacocks; this, the hue of doves; and this,

the hue of balsam; and this, the hue of fragrant herbs.

In my heart is a madness from you that never leaves me,

whereas a madman has fits only at times [reading uncertain].
