حَدِّثtell عنabout الغادينthose departing at dawn أينَwhere ترحَّلُواthey journeyed away
وسَرتand journeyed بهمwith them منamong عيسِpale camels مَهْرةَMahrah بُزَّلُfull-grown camels
Tell of those who departed at dawn: where did they go?
Speak of those who journeyed, where did they wander?
And full-grown, pale camels of Mahrah carried them away.
They traveled with joy from Ays to buzzing Buzal.
أينَwhere الخيامُthe tents وأهلهُand its people قدalready أوحشتْgrew desolate
لهمfor them أينwhere بهاin them الغزالthe gazelle الأكحلُdark-eyed
Where are the tents and their people? They have grown desolate
Where are the tents and their people, so lonesome now,
In their absence. Where among them is the kohl-eyed gazelle?
And where are the beautiful dark gazelles?
لماwhen وقفتI stood علىat المنازلthe dwellings بعدَهمafter them
أطرقتI lowered طرفيmy gaze والمدامعand the tear ducts تهملُstream
When I stood at the dwellings after their departure,
When I stopped at their campsites after they left,
I lowered my gaze, while my tears streamed.
I bowed my head and copious tears rolled down.
وبقيتand I remained أنكتI scratch فيin الترابthe dust بأنمليwith my fingertips
حزناًin sorrow ومَاand not تجديavail عليَّfor me الأنملُthe fingertips
And I kept scratching the dust with my fingertips,
In sorrow, I traced in the sand with my fingers,
In sorrow; yet my fingertips availed me nothing.
Though tracing brings me no solace or comfort.
ياO رائحينthose departing إلىto الشامal-Sham وليسand there is no ليfor me
منfrom بعدهمafter them عُوَضٌcompensation ولاand no مُتَبدّلُsubstitute
O you bound for al-Sham, I have no
O breeze blowing to Syria, I have no
Compensation after them, nor any substitute.
Consolation or substitute after their loss.
أنكرتI found unfamiliar بعدكمafter you الأراكَthe arak tree فطالمَاfor so often
قدindeed كنتُI used to تحتَbeneath ظلالهits shade اتظللُI shelter in shade
I found the arak tree strange after you, for so often
After you left, I found the meadows strange,
I had sheltered beneath its shade.
Though long I sat shaded under their trees.
وذكرتُand I remembered أياميmy days القصارَbrief بقربكمnear you
والبينُand parting مغضوضُlowered الجفونthe eyelids مُغَفّلُheedless
And I recalled my brief days beside you,
I recalled our brief days when you were near,
While parting lay heedless, its eyelids lowered.
While my eyes brimmed with tears and grief.

حمراءred تحملهاshe carries it رداحٌa full-figured woman عيطلُtall
Days when I was served pure, potent wine,
Days I sated with pure wine, crimson,
Red, carried by a full-figured, tall woman.
Carried in a lovely crystal decanter.
أعتضتُI received in exchange وحشاًsolitude بعدafter ذاكthat ولمand not تزلceased
للدهرfor time أيامdays تجورdeal unjustly وتعدلand deal justly
After that I received solitude in exchange; and always
After you left, the days turned cruel and unjust,
Time has days that deal unjustly and days that deal justly.
Bringing sorrow, though time does oscillate.
لاdo not تحسَبُواyou think إنيthat I نسيتI forgot عهوَدكمyour pledges
هيهاتfar from it لاnot يُنْسَىis forgotten الحبيبُthe beloved الأولُthe first
Do not think I have forgotten your pledges.
Think not I forgot our covenants and bonds,
Far from it! The first beloved is never forgotten.
Never! One's first love is not forgotten.

عَيشٌlife ولاnor ماءٌwater بجاحِفat Jahif سَلَسْلُsweet and easy to drink
Since I parted from you, I have found no pleasure at Saham
Since you left, neither life nor drink in a silver cup
In life, nor in the sweet water at Jahif.
Could weaken me, though parting's arrows pierced deep.
ياO حاملbearer القرطاسthe sheet of paper كُلُّevery بليَةaffliction
إلاّexcept فراقَparting from ذويthose possessing المودِةaffection تسهُلُbecomes easy
O bearer of the page, every affliction
O carrier of scrolls, there is no tribulation
Is easy to bear, except parting from loved ones.
Like the sorrow of being parted from loved ones.
